Photo Session Tips: What to Wear for your Photo Session

The most frequently asked question I get asked before a photo session is probably "What should I wear?"

It's probably something you should plan 2 weeks to a month ahead of time, in case you feel you want to purchase a new outfit for yourself, new jeans for your son, or any accessories you want to add.

Coordinate multiple colors for your photo session.  Matchy-Matchy is SO 1985.

Tip #1: Coordinate, but DON'T match.
In a photo session, you certainly don't want to clash, but at the same time, everyone wearing the same color looks boring and dated.  You're not in uniform.  Allow each person to stand out as an individual, but in a color pallette that looks coordinated.

It may help to pick a theme, like Nautical, to help coordinate everyone's outfit for the photo session.

Tip #2: Avoid busy multicolor prints.
Many large graphic prints are interesting, but can certainly steal the show. (You're the star, not your clothes!) Think about the environment that you'll be in, and if those colors/prints work with the surroundings.  If you really feel like you'd like to wear loud prints, wear them on a skirt or pants, trying to stay further away from your face.

Texture can add beautiful details to the photos without taking away from the overall look and feel of the session.

Tip #3: Add texture.
Instead of using detail in overwhelming colorful prints, find a way to bring texture into your outfit. It could certainly be found in accessories like hats and scarves, and even in jewelery. Just don't go overboard on the textures.

Stay with a simple color pallette when choosing what you'll wear for your photo session.

Tip #4: Avoid Logos.
As much as your son might love his superman shirt, your session day might not be the appropriate time to wear it.  Our eyes are naturally drawn to text, especially if it's the only text in the photo.  Logos can be an eyesore, and certainly date your photos.

Consider everyone's skin tone when choosing colors for your photo session.

Tip #5: Dress Rehearsal.
If you're not sure about everyone's outfits working well together, do a dress rehearsal and have everyone gather around a mirror.  Will you want this arrangement hanging on your walls for a year?

Tip #6: Be Comfortable!
There's nothing worse than an itchy sweater, or jeans that are a bit too tight.  Make sure you're comfortable sitting, standing and walking in the clothes you wear in your session.  It will show in your expression!
